- Project FIRST,
a branch of Americorps, is a nationwide program targeted at integrating technology
into public schools. InSan Francisco, 8 Americorps workers, with the cooperation
of the San Francisco Education Fund, have been working in 16public school
libraries. Their activities have been varied: inservicing teachers, administrators,
and librarians, designingtechnology use plans, generating CD ROM and Internet
lessons, mentoring students, building web pages, recycling donatedcomputers,
setting up LANs, offering community outreach and general technical support
within San Francisco Unified. Wefocus on the library--attempting to integrate
technology responsibly and comprehensively, with the growing demands of newinformation
systems. This page has links to student projects on the web, various academic
resources for teachers and students, listings of inservices for SFUSD, and
space for library advocacy and literacy projects.
- Partners in School Innovation is a national service program at work in the
public schools of the San Francisco Bay Area. We commit for three to five
years to schools that serve predominantly low-income children, have a commitment
to whole school change, and have a strong leadership team working to achieve
the school's vision for excellence. In each partner school, AmeriCorps members
help to develop, implement, and institutionalize important projects to meet
school priorities. At Bryant Elementary we are helping create a sustainable
conflict management program, parent participation program, and student leadership
initiatives. Contact us at partnerssi@aol.com
