D. Sheep and Goats

Detail from a Persian manuscript "Life in the Camp" showing a woman milking a goat. By Mir Sayyid Ali, 1540.

Sheep and goats were important for food (milk and meat) and for hides and wool used to make clothing. Below, animals are grazing (eating grass) in an oasis in Morocco and in a mountain valley of Afghanistan.

E. Cows and Oxen

Cows and oxen were used for plowing (and therefore were not eaten often). They were also raised for milk. Their hides (skins) were also used for leather goods.
