Eighth Grade
Well hi! My name is Aracely G. and I'm 14 years old and I'm happy to have a bilingual system at Horace Mann school because we are able to speak our cultural languages.
Having a bilingual education is very helpful because we have a better chance for job opportunities. Also we can make higher salaries if we use our bilingual skills.
My experience in junior high was not bad because Horace Mann has bilingual classes and we were able to speak both languages. Some of us did like the way that we had bilingual classes and we had the opportunity to speak our own languages.

When I was in elementary school I was in a class called E.S.L. (English as a Second Language). I do think that this helped me because They teach you two languages and they help you to know how to read better. I was in this class for about two years and it helped me to improve my English and to become a better reader.
I interviewed my next door neighbor about this. She told me that she thinks that E.S.L. is good and so does her mom. The reason is that when she started E.S.L. she had a lot of problems reading and speaking English.
She said that Proposition 227 will be bad for kids like her who take those classes. She said: "In my opinion they should have those classes the way it has been until today"

Imagine that you come to America from another country. Everything is new to you. You don't speak English. Your parents want the best for you, so they put you in school. The thing is when you get there you are put into a class with many children just like you who speak little or no English. The teacher can only teach you in English. In less than a year you will be put into a regular class. Scary?
Well, this is what would happen if the Unz Initiative passes on June 2nd. This initiative, sponsored by Palo Alto businessman Ron Unz, would harm the 1.38 million schoolchildren who speak little or no English in California. He has created a specific plan for teaching. Within 60 days after it passes children who speak limited English would be put into a "sheltered English immersion" class, regardless of their differences in age, cultural backgrounds and academic abilities. Their teacher would not be allowed to speak to them in their own language because of the threat of a lawsuit. After only 180 days these same children would be out into regular classes, whether or not they know enough English to do well in school.
I know many people in my school that would be affected if this passes. Many children in California will have a hard time learning in school only because they couldn't understand the language the teacher was speaking.
Imagine the future if the Unz Initiative passes. Think about the effect it would have on the 1.38 million limited English speaking children in California. It will not save taxpayers any money according to the State Legislative Analyst and the initiative itself. Think about this in June, will the Unz Initiative help or hurt?

Mi experiencia en elementary school y middle school es que siempre estuve en clases de ESL (English as your Second Language) por toda mi vida aprendiendo el inglés. Yo tuve la oportunidad de aprender pero no lo supe bien. Yo se que cuando cualquier persona llega a los Estados Unidos no sabe que quiere hacer y se siente muy estraño sin estar en su propio pais o está más acostumbrado a estar en su propio lugar que a conocer otro.
Cuando llegué a San Francisco California mi vida fue diferente y comencé con una etapa muy difícil porque no sabía el inglés. Yo estaba nerviosa y estraña que me sentía en escuelas que me iban a preguntar o hablarme o pensaba que no iba a comunicarme con otras personas. Tuve oportunidad de ir a la escuela que mis padres me pusieron llamada "John Muir" yo tuve que esforzarme para aprender y seguir adelante con mis estudios. Estuve en clases de español o bilingüe con maestros que hablaban español .Mi maestra Ms. Vidales me ayudó mucho a aprender el inglés y otros maestros también. Tuve una amiga que estuuvo en la misma escuela y clases que sabía el inglés que se llamaba Griselda Molina que me ayudó a hablar con otros alumnos. Habían otras compañeras y compañeros que hablaban español.
Yo sufrí aprendiendo ese lenguage o idioma bien difícil que costaba mucho y así crecí y seguí aprendiendo. Comencé aprendiendo con palabras sencillas como lapiz-pencil, maestra-teacher, flor-flower,etc. Pero no sabía decir palabras en oraciones. Yo tuve a compañeras que me traducían a español. Yo seguí avanzando paso a paso seguí adelante. No es facil aprender un idioma nuevo que uno nunca lo ha oído. Después seguí creciendo y pasé los grados con buena calificación.
Si pasara la Iniciativa Unz me afectara mucho porque no entenderia las tareas y trabajos o nada. Hubiera mucho cambio y sería terrible y mas horrible. Todos necesitamos ayudar a votar en junio contra esta proposición #227 porque nos van a quitar la educación bilingüe y todo va a cambiar en un modo no favorito. No va a ayudar a los estudiantes que vengan de este pais.

My name is Keren Lemos and I came from Cuba 3 years ago. When I came from Cuba, I didn't speak any English. My first year in the United States, I went to a regular school, but I didn't understand anything. My second year, my dad told me, " Keren you're going to go to a bilingual school ". I said "OK". In this bilingual school, I learned all the English I know now, and I am really thankful for that. We used computer programs and different language programs, so we could learn English. Thanks to this I am now in regular classes. That's why I don't want people to take away Bilingual Classes.

Proposition #227 sais to take out bilingual and ESL classes and not speak other languages at school. Think what would happen to the kids! Think about having to learn English in one year! Who could learn to speak perfect English in one year?
What would happen if it passes? The kids who don't know English will have one year to learn. Then they will be put in a regular classes where the teachers speak only English. How will they learn if they can't understand what the teacher is saying? They might not be able to understand what the teacher is saying because they might not have learned the words that the teacher is using. Everyone wants their kids to learn. Why make it harder for them?
Today in our society one problem we have is the homeless. If immigrants don't learn enough English they won't get a job and that might increase the homeless. We are trying not to have homeless people, more of them won't help. We need to help people to get a job and succeed. Proposition 227 will not help!!

In this society I believe you must learn the main language spoken, English, but also know yours as well. We should not only want to learn our own language but know the language that is spoken more commonly in the environment around you. I feel that the immigrants are striving to learn English.
We must all learn and think about these issues because it could affect others and affect our classes also. These are my feelings about the Unz Initiative.

Hubo una persona que entrevisté que dijo que toda la gente no quiere que hablemos español. No tienen el derecho de quitarnos eso porque algunos de los americanos no les gusta trabajar o no le gusta buscar trabajo, están de haraganes en la dieciséis o otros lugares pidiendo dinero o haciendo travesuras que después culpan otra gente. Viven de los latinos o de otra raza, porque todo lo que ganamos va a ellos.
Si pasa la proposición 227, algunos no podrán aprender en la escuela y no podrán tener un buen trabajo. Todos tenemos el derecho de aprender.

Is having ESL an advantage or it is just too much? Many people might think learning one language is difficult enough, why do we have to learn another language.
Unz's initiative would ban all languages in America and have English the one supreme language. This is Prop 227, no matter how good it sounds when Unz's is saying it. This law is absurd. A law that wouldn't be so bad would be:
Everyone is America must be fluent in English and still be given a choice of learning a second language. Maybe even three or four.
I don't know what Ron Unz is thinking, but if this initiative is passed it will greatly impact America. First, large amounts of money may be wasted to enforce this law. The time period given to a person to learn English is so short, many might not be able to learn English. The youngest people might not be affected because they learn quickly, but what of immigrants, they will not be able to pick up the English language as quickly. Unz is not considering many people.
So to all the voters: Do not listen to this Ron Unz guy. Vote against his Proposition. For the people who can't vote, get other people who can you vote against Ron Unz as well.

Mi nombre es Alejandro Patiño. Yo en este momento estoy en el octavo grado en la escuela "Horace Mann". Soy de México y yo quiero compartir mi vida, cuando yo llegué de México a los Estados Unidos y no sabía inglés.
Mi primera escuela fue la "Mission Education Center" en el tercer grado y desde allí empecé a tener la clase de ESL que quiere decir (English as your second Language). Mi maestra nos daba solo como 30 minutos de inglés pero yo no le entendía nada porque cuando yo entré a la escuela ya había empezado y solo faltaban 2 o 3 meses para salir y yo no sabía en que nivel iban. Le doy gracias a esa escuela porque yo hice amistades y vi los problemas que tenían para hablar en inglés. Con eso pude empezar a abrir los ojos y sacar nuevas palabras de mi boca como el abecedario.
Cuando me gradué de esa escuela me mandaron al cuarto grado pero no en la misma escuela me mandaron a una que se llama "John Muir". No sabía casi nada de inglés, había aprendido solo a decir como maestra "teacher" lápiz "pencil" pluma "pen" ventana "window" y gallina "chicken". Esto lo aprendí porque era una canción que mi maestra nos cantaba para descansar y aunque no me la sé en orden nunca se me iran a olvidar estas palabras.
Yo pasé una vergüenza porque todos los de la clase ya sabían inglés y se podían comunicar y yo no. Yo tenía un amigo que se hacía cargo de mí para traducirme lo que decía el maestro y también me ayudaba como hacer mis tareas. Meses después, yo ya había aprendido como entenderles pero todavía no sabía como hablarlo.
El maestro nos leía un libro y teníamos que contestar unas preguntas, todos las contestaban menos yo porque no les entendía y también todos leían en frente de la clase, menos yo. Cuando yo trataba de hablar en inglés los estudiantes me decían que me callara porque no sabía hablar y yo me sentía muy mal como con ganas de llorar y gritar por dentro de mí con una rabia muy furiosa.
Cuando pasó un año yo ya estaba en el quinto grado y yo ya había aprendido como hablarlo pero me trababa mucho y lo hablaba con acento. El maestro ya me hacia preguntas del libro yo ya sabía un poco como contestarlas pero no sabía como escribirlas muy bien. Cuando pasaron meses yo ya había aprendido mucho mas y el maestro me felicitó porque ya había progresado pero yo sentía de que me hacia falta seguir estudiando mas hasta que me enfade. En mi graduación de quinto grado yo sentí de que me esperaba una nueva etapa y que iba a sufrir mas y si me pasó.
En 1996 yo llegué a la escuela "Horace Mann" y la primera clase que tomé fue la de ESL porque esa clase era para aprender inglés y lo que me gustó fue que me encontré con mis amigos que había tenido en la escuela "Mission Education Center" y como yo y ellos ya veníamos decididos para aprender todos juntos aprendimos como si dios se nos hubiera puesto en nuestro camino. Cuando llegué al sexto grado ya sabía mas hablar inglés y con un poco de acento y ya sabía hacer mis tareas solo en inglés y comunicarme con mis amigos y maestros.
En 1997 yo ya estaba en el séptimo grado y ya era un poco mas fácil para mí porque ya sabía hablar con todos en inglés pero seguía teniendo errores que ahora son muy fáciles para corregirlos y todavía seguía teniendo la clase de ESL y yo estaba muy feliz pero me hicieron sentir muy mal porque mis amigos que estaban en la clase de Arte de Lenguaje se burlaban de mí y de mis otros amigos porque decían que andábamos aprendiendo en inglés pero no se daban cuenta de que ellos un día también sufrieron para hablar inglés como nosotros sufrimos.
En 1998 llegué al octavo grado donde estoy ahorita y gracias a dios ya estoy en Arte de Lenguaje y ya nadie de mis amigos se burla de mí porque ya les puedo demostrar de que si pude lograrlo y ahora ya me comunico bien con los que se burlaban de mí y solo tengo uno o dos errores.
Cuando me dí cuenta de la propuesta #227 que nos quieren quitar los programas bilingües mi opinión de esto es negativo porque si pasa esa propuesta nos va a afectar a todos los que tenemos clases bilingües y más para toda la gente que viene de países sin saber inglés y no tendrían la oportunidad de ser algo bueno en sus vidas. Espero que todos se pongan en contra de la propuesta de UNZ #227 y que luchemos por nuestra cultura nacional siendo distintos.
