Explorers from Spain came to California to conquer new lands for their country. These explorers were followed by the missionaries who created California's missions. Below are students' accounts of what some explorers may have said or written.

It is 1602 and I'm still exploring the Monterey coast on the ship of the Spanish king. I've been mapping the bay and it is an exellent harbor. I've also been taking notes that the Rumsien Ohlone Indians from the South Bay were good natured and generous.

From The Journal of Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo
by Jennifer

In 1542, I Juan Rodriguez Cabrillo, became the first European to land on the coast of Alta California. I planned to chart the unfamiliar shores of the central coast. The Indians provided a feast of bonito for strangers. In exchange for food and fresh water, we gave the Chumash glass beads.I claimed the land for Spain.

Letter from Sir Francis Drake to the Queen of England
by Ryan

1579,My boat has just arrived in New Spain. It seems very curious that the crew is exhausted because we were sailing all night. I will go exploring. We found Indians that think we are water gods. We feel very safe but my boat, "The Golden Hind"" sprung a leak. We have claimed the land for England. After we fix "The Golden Hind, "we will sail around the world.
